Posted March 14, 2020 14:04:09The world’s biggest tobacco companies are rolling out new products in the United States, with some pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with their latest designs.
The US Tobacco Institute (USTI) said it was “deeply excited” to launch a brand new product this week in New York’s Times Square.
The company, which was founded in 1998 and is one of the largest tobacco producers in the world, said it had just launched a new version of the Marlboro “Triple Zero” cigarette, which uses the same design as the brand’s current “Tri-Zero” cigarette.
It was called the “Tri” due to the Triple Zero triad, with the three names being “tri”, “zero” and “one”.
“It was the first time we have done something like this,” the company said.
“The idea was to get the product onto shelves that are more popular and popular with smokers.”
The new Marlboros, which are the world’s most popular tobacco products, will be sold in stores and online at a starting price of $3.99 per pack.
Tobacco companies are also pushing the limits of what is possible with cigarettes and the new designs have sparked criticism from some experts.
The American Lung Association (ALA), for example, called the new products “unethical”.
“These new designs don’t meet the standards of safety and quality that we expect from our tobacco products,” the association said in a statement.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said in April that tobacco companies were breaking the law by using harmful substances.
It said in its Global Tobacco Survey 2016 that almost 80 per cent of smokers smoked less than 100 cigarettes per day, and that of those who did, almost half were using less than one-third of the product they smoked.
“We have to find a way to prevent these products from getting into the hands of children, and I think the industry has failed on that,” WHO’s Philip Nitschke told the ABC.
“If they’re going to do it, they should do it responsibly.”
Tobaccos are widely used to smoke and are considered to be the world-famous brand name of cigarettes.
They are the same size as regular cigarettes and are widely available in many countries around the world.
“Tobacconists are making cigarettes the way it was meant to be used and we don’t want it to be left behind,” said Marjorie O’Connell, an associate professor of pharmacology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
“This is an opportunity for us to say ‘no, we can do this better’.”
But experts say the new product could be problematic for young smokers.
“It will be an issue for young people because they’re the ones who are smoking in the first place and this will mean that they’ll be using it more often and using it less,” said Dr Nitschkes.
Toby Miller, who has been working with the tobacco industry for 20 years, said the new cigarettes were “dangerous”.
“We know that it’s not only tobacco but there’s other chemicals in the tobacco that can harm young people and that’s what the WHO’s finding is.”
So we need to make sure that the products we’re putting out there are safe,” he said.
But Professor Miller said the tobacco companies could try to find other products that are healthier for children, including a “smokeless tobacco” or a “cigarette with water”.”
That would be a very clever idea, but it’s going to be a challenge,” he told ABC Radio Melbourne.
Treaties deal with cigarettesThe US and other countries have also signed deals with other tobacco companies to regulate their use in their countries.
But many countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Spain, have rejected the deal, arguing it is too weak and could lead to more harm.
The UK Government is looking at the possible implementation of a “zero-tobacco” scheme that would see smoking banned in public places for a year and new restrictions placed on tobacco marketing.”
There are plenty of things that could be done to help,” Health Minister Peter Dutton said.
Australia’s former health minister, Jane Garrett, also called for an end to the “dangerously addictive” habit of smoking.”
For us to continue to see this kind of behaviour in our children and young people, that’s a problem and we need action,” she said.
